Dopo la dipartita di Takeoff, un’altra triste scomparsa addolora la comunità hip hop: la rapper Hurricane G è morta.
Hurricane G: la malattia
L’artista newyorkese di origini portoricane si è spenta all’età di 52 anni. Al momento, non è stata rivelata la causa della sua scomparsa. Tuttavia, stando a un post su Facebook del 20 maggio scorso di sua figlia, Hurricane G soffriva di cancro ai polmoni in stadio avanzato:
«My mom has stage 4 lung cancer. I dont know how many of you understand what that means but even after 30 years of life Im still trying to process it myself. I have never cried so much in my life I have never felt so disconnected from reality in my life. Yet my mom still manages to be the one to hold it together and say “dont worry baby everythings gonna be alright”. Shit im crying right now but today is a blessing».
Hurricane G: le condoglianze delle persone a lei più vicine
A dare conferma del decesso, con delle parole di commiato attraverso i social, sono stati il produttore del suo album di debutto Domingo Padilla e il rapper, nonché padre di sua figlia, Erick Sermon. Il primo, in un post su Instagram, ha scritto:
«R.I.P. to my good friend Hurricane G. Really sad news to get. I was blessed to know her and produce her debut album. God bless her family and daughter».
In un altro contenuto, invece, ha ricordato degli aneddoti sul lavoro svolto insieme e sul carattere dell’artista:
«I have so many crazy stories from working with Hurricane G on her album All Woman. We recorded that album in my apartment in Ozone Park Queens on a Tascam 388 and I took the whole reel machine to 78/88 studios and dumped the music to 2 inch reels then mixed it with @kidcus in Unique and Chung King studios. Gloria was a really kind hearted funny person but when she was mad stay out her way…LOL.
I saw her make a famous radio personality cry in a studio and when I drove Gloria home we argued about why she did that and she kept it real with me she said “Domingo that bi**h don’t fool me she is a 2 face”. Gonna miss speaking to her on the phone and hear her say. “Domingo you got that funky ass fire for me or what motherfucker”… R.I.P Gloria “Hurricane G” Rodriguez».
Il rapper degli EPMD, sempre attraverso Instagram, ha rivolto tenere parole all’artista scomparsa, ricordando anche il suo valore artistico:
«My heart is hardened today. One of my good friends…. my oldest daughter mother passed away today #HURRICANE GLORIA was also a legend in her own right in the Hiphop community. One of the first puertorican female rappers She rapped with me. @redmangilla she paved the way
@keithmurray @diddy she was in all the Hiphop magazines with all the top females at the time.. #stretchandbobito loved a song that she did called “MILKY” She will be missed all around the world. I can’t believe this. Pray for us. Beautiful blessings. She was a beautiful person a wonderful mother as real as they come. We love u G».
Hurricane G: la carriera
Hurricane G, all’anagrafe Gloria Rodríguez, fu il primo membro femminile della Hit Squad, un collettivo hip hop dell’East Coast, da cui nacque la Def Squad, con la quale iniziò la sua ascesa verso il successo dalla partecipazione nel brano Tonight’s Da Night di Radman, artista con cui collaborò anche due anni dopo nel brano We Run NY contenuto nell’album Dare Iz a Darkside del poliedrico artista cresciuto nel New Jersey.
Nel 1997 pubblicò il suo album di debutto, rappato in inglese e spagnolo, All Woman per la label americana HOLA Recordings. Il singolo estratto dal disco Somebody Else (traccia che campiona la hit You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else, del 1979, di The Jones Girls) raggiunse la Top Ten della classifica Hot Rap Singles. Nel 2013 uscì il suo secondo e ultimo album dal titolo Mami & Papi, realizzato con Thirstin Howl III. Tra i due dischi, Hurricane G collaborò con i suoi compagni di crew Xzibit, Funkdoobiest e Keith Murray; nel 1999 si unì a Puff Daddy nella traccia P.E. 2000.
